A couple of weeks ago Wesley Endeman aka Locklead participated in the ‘Triphouse Rotterdam King of the Beat Battle 2014’ and to his own surprise conquered the first prize! We asked him some questions in order to introduce you to this freshly anointed King.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your first encounters with electronic music.
Hi, my name is Wesley Endeman and I’m 25 years old. I grew up in a little town called Nijverdal near Zwolle in the east of Netherlands. I remember the first track I really liked was ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ from Stardust, for me it was the perfect crossover from funk to dance (grew up with motown, soul, funk & hiphop). Then some years later as a teenager I remember listened to tracks from Gui Boratto & Nathan Fake over at a friends house. This is more the experimental side of electronic music, but back then I love how they could generate such deep vibes. Shortly after that I reached the point where i went to the first underground (illegal) house/techno party in Zwolle, after that I was completely hooked on house and techno music.
Please tell us something about your studio setup and producer techniques.
It’s funny you mention the name studio, since I only use a beefed up Macbook Pro 15″ and a pair of AiAiAi TMA-1 Studio headphones. It’s not that i want a larger studio, but as any other guy i don’t always have the money for gear or renting a studio. A teacher once said to me; “It’s not what you have, it’s what you do with it.”, and on that note I tried to get as much out of Ableton as i could. After watching a shitloud of tutorials and documentaries, I gathered all the information i need to produce authentic house with that refined raw edge. I for instance always use a MPC swing in all of my tracks and always process my sounds & samples, since every track in the early days was pulled through tape recorders, compressors etc.
How did you end up participating in the Beat Battle? Did you have any training before going into combat?
A friend of me contacted me three days before the actual Beat Battle, so big shout-out to him. I’ve been fumbling around in FruityLoops when I was thirteen, at the age of nineteen I discovered Ableton Live. I think all the years of twisting and turning knobs and, and constantly hit google ifI froze was the best training i could have. Plus it helped me to generate a certain speed in my production time, which came in handy since we only had one hour.
What are your future plans? Any releases coming up?
Make a shitload of good records which will hopefully get me to in a lot of places, where i can meet a lot of people with the same drive and taste as me. DJ’ing has become a part of my live as well, i definitely wanna expand that into bigger measures and i’m even contemplating on a live set. I’ve got releases coming up on BMKLTSCH, Soulfood, SlapFunk, Albion & more.
Have you already tried out some of your prizes? Do you have any tips for future contestants of the Beat Battle?
Yep, Komplete 9 by Native Instruments. One word; awesome. And as for the future contestants I would recommend that you should produce fast & efficient (when the sound is done, go on to next one). Plus don’t bring out any midi equipment unless your are really gonna use this, this can be a distraction from what you really want to make. But the best tip I can give you is; do what you always do, and have fun.
